September 10, 2008
Hello Everyone! It’s time for the next Q-WAVE General Meeting!! …*part 1* in our *series* on Queer Asian Health
Thanks to our dedicated members Gina George, Michelle Olivero and Aries Liao, we are actually putting on a *series* over our next several meetings, with workshops, discussions, games and forums on topics related to Queer Asian Holistic Health.

By being healthy in all realms allows us to build stronger relationships, families, and communities. This one is particularly interesting and amazing b/c this film festival was banned in Beijing, that’s why it was brought to NYC. Join Q-Wave’s film club, Get Reel!, make this film festival a massive success! Get Reel! will be there for the entire film festival all weekend long; we look forward to seeing you there!
Asia Catalyst presents
COMRADES: CHINESE LGBT FILM FESTIVAL Banned in Beijing — Out in New York!
A weekend showcase of work from a gay film festival that authorities banned in Beijing. The images and words of these new filmmakers give New Yorkers a glimpse into the hidden lives of gay Chinese. The festival includes both commercial and independent work that shows the broad spectrum of lesbian, gay and transgender experience as it is lived day-to-day in China. The old Communist term “comrade” has a secret meaning — it’s used by some gay and bisexual people in China
to refer to themselves. The films screened at “Comrades: The Chinese LGBT Film Festival” came from a series of attempts by Chinese filmmakers to hold an LGBT Film Festival in Beijing — gatherings that local police repeatedly shut down.
All films are screened at the LGBT Community Center, 208 West 13th Street.
Just $35 for a weekend pass for all four films!
9/5: 6 pm Opening reception; 7 pm “East Palace, West Palace” (in Mandarin with English subtitles)
9/6: 2 pm “Tangtang” (in Mandarin with English subtitles)
7 pm Panel discussion featuring Chinese film festival organizer speaking by teleconference from Beijing
7:45pm “Butterfly” (in Mandarin and Cantonese with English subtitles)
9/7: 2 pm “Welcome to Destination Shanghai” (in Mandarin with English subtitles)
