Queer Asian, South Asian and Pacific Islander communities have specific investments in the ongoing immigration debate. Some of us are in bi-national partnerships and face an uncertain future under DOMA. Many of us are undocumented, and live in fear of detention and deportation. Many of us have been kicked-out of our homes, might not have a steady income or reliable access to healthcare, and feel isolated in our battles for survival.Come join us for a community story share for queer Asian, South Asian, and Pacific Islander people to speak about our experiences of immigration in a safe, supportive, and confidential space. Our stories will help us see what we have in common as queer people of Asian, South Asian, and Pacific Islander (ASAPI) descent. Together, we will also address our shared problems with the immigration system so that we may plan ongoing events and actions that support queer ASAPI people. Loved ones are welcome to attend, but the voices of queer ASAPI people will be prioritized at this event. Resources and support for immediate immigration needs will also be shared.

Coming Out Stories: Asian-American LGBT Experiences

This month we’ve joined the forces with APICHA Project Connect’s Healthier Me Workshop, as both a program of General Meetings and PSN.
What: Coming Out Stories: Asian American LGBTQ Experiences
When: April 5th, 2013 // 6:30pm reception // 7pm-9pm workshop

There’ll be a panel of four speakers, fully representing the LGBT spectrum: Pauline Park, Michelle Olivero, Jason Tseng, & Quail Liang. They’ll talk about coming out to family, friends, and in the workplace, and we will invite discussion from participants.
We’re also very excited to welcome guests Asian Pride Project and the API Project from PFLAG, who both offer space and resources for family and friends of LGBTQ API folks. They’ll be available for questions and resources.
Please keep in mind that this is a safe space for participants: we ask that you be sensitive in understanding that coming out is a tremendous psychological hurdle and a personal act of courage and authenticity – and we are all at different stages, with different perspectives.
We ask that you practice:
1) confidentiality – don’t share what individuals say during the event with anyone outside of the event
2) compassion – leave the combativeness at the door – discussion is welcome, but most importantly we’re here to build each other up, not to tear each other down.
If you have a friend who identifies as API LGBTQ who does not have much experience with support or coming out dialogue, this is a great opportunity to introduce them to a warm and passionate community.

“Where are you really from? Are you a boy or a girl?”: A Discussion on Microaggressions and Macroaggressions
Have you been treated like you are an alien? Have you been stopped from entering bars or clubs because of your citizen status or been bullied because of the way you look? Do people make assumptions about your because of your race, ethnicity, gender, and sexual orientation? Let’s talk about how we experience this, what those things are really about, and learn together how we could deal with them.
Who? Q-WAVE members old and new. We are especially welcoming PSN members to this month’s GM!
Why? Q-WAVE wants lesbian, bisexual, queer women and transgender Asians to feel supported in society and is a place to build this support.
What? An interactive discussion over light refreshments (and we usually go out to dinner together afterwards)
When? Friday, March 22, 2013 from 7 pm – 9 pm

FEB. 17th Join the LGBTQ contingent of NYC’s Lunar New Year Parade!

Dear friends,
2013 will mark our 4th year marching in the Lunar New Year parade.
Four years ago, Lunar New Year for All, led by members of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer (LGBTQ) Asian Pacific Islander (API) community, successfully petitioned to be a part of the historic Lunar New Year parade in Manhattan’s Chinatown. It was the first time that a LGBTQ contingent joined the Lunar New Year parade in New York City.
Help us continue the tradition by joining Lunar New Year for All on Sunday, Feb. 17th to celebrate the Year of the Snake.
WHY WE MARCH —
We march because homophobia, transphobia and discrimination still exist in Asian Pacific Islander (API) communities. We march for the grandmas, grandpas, aunties, uncles, mothers, fathers, siblings, cousins and all other family members in our community who love and accept us for who we are. And we march to honor all of the different kinds of families that exist in our community.
JOIN US —
When? Sunday, February 17th.
Where? The parade is convening at the corner of Hester Street and Mott Street at 11:30 AM. Please be on time because everyone’s convening the contingents there. We may not be at that exact corner when we space ourselves out but we’ll be near there. Volunteers should meet us at 11:00 AM at Project Reach on 39 Eldridge Street, 4th floor to help us move the banners, posters, snake and other materials.
What time? Parade starts at 1pm. Folks should not wait to meet us until 1 PM because they won’t be able to reach us in time because of the crowds.
After the march, we will have an after-party at Project Reach.
Lunar New Year for All is open to all, particularly LGBTQ APIs and family members.

- Come to our Info. Session/Prep Party on Tuesday, Feb 12 from 7-9 PM at Project Reach – This will include a presentation on API Equality’s research on how to talk about LGBT issues to Asian people of different generations. Food will be available.
