Friday, 10/19 GM – Vote ASAP!…Building the Power of Asian, South Asian, and Pacific Islander Communities through the Electoral Process

October 8, 2012

Our October GM continues our 3-part series with GAPIMNY and SALGA!

FRIDAY, OCTOBER 19, 2012, 7pm to 9pm
CUNY Graduate Center, Room C205 (365 Fifth Avenue at 34th Street)

“Vote ASAP!…Building the Power of Asian, South Asian, and Pacific Islander (ASAP) Communities through the Electoral Process”Part II: Voter Suppression in 2012 and Election Day Volunteer Training*********
Meeting Description:Although New York has a large proportion of ASAP communities who are eligible to vote, voter suppression occurs in subtle ways and silences our representation in government. And due to the number of documented cases of deterrents to ASAP communities exercising their right to vote, voter suppression or so-called “election protection” has been a hot topic all around the U.S. in recent months.

Come and learn more about the latest in these modern era Jim Crow laws and how they affect the ASAP community. GAPIMNY, Q-WAVE, and SALGA, are partnering with The Asian American Legal Defense and Education Fund (AALDEF) and the National Queer Asian Pacific Islander Alliance (NQAPIA) to facilitate this one-time workshop. We will be recruiting and training volunteers to help AALDEF administer a multilingual voter survey and to document voting problems on Election Day at poll sites around NY and NJ. This year’s survey will also poll Asian American voters about their attitudes and support for same-sex marriage.

Whether or not you vote this year, you can help with AALDEF’s project to monitor poll sites on November 6 in Asian American neighborhoods in New York City and 14 other states. We are seeking bilingual speakers (elementary level speaking proficiency is all you need) in any of the following languages: Bengali, Cantonese, Gujarati, Hindi, Japanese, Khmer, Korean, Malayalam, Mandarin, Punjabi, Tagalog, Urdu, and Vietnamese.

March General Meeting

March 12, 2012

Please join our next General Meeting 3/16!

In this month’s meeting, we shall be observing the relationships between Asian American and Western culture on homosexuality.

*Why is homosexuality tabooed within the Asian narrative?

*Was homosexuality always viewed through a negative scope in Asian Culture?

*How has Western influences alter, or form permanent fixtures of identities within the Asian context?

*Have we heard any homophobic things we heard from family or friends?

*How are our identities formed and how are we viewed by those that are not within our community?

*What are some acceptable behaviors in both Asian and Western culture that are usually deemed homosexual but can pass as harmless play?

We shall be exploring the different narratives that form hegemonic views of homosexuality within the pan-Asian and Western context. Fun and engaging group activities are also included within our agenda to help us build a better understanding of the topics we are trying to convey.

Think you’ll be hungry? Snacks and light refreshments will be served~ After the meeting we can further congregate on what we would like to eat.
